Courts Expansion Phase 1 Complete

Wasatch County is investing in justice and public safety through a major expansion of its justice center. Phase 1, completed in December 2025, added new state and juvenile court spaces.

The full expansion is scheduled for completion in August 2026 and will modernize the facility, improve security, and provide the space needed to serve a growing community.

Originally built in the 1990s, the Wasatch County Justice Center has been home to the Fourth District Court, Juvenile Court, and the Wasatch County Justice Court. All three courts have shared a single courtroom, and as the community grows, they have faced scheduling conflicts and space limitations.

This expansion addresses those constraints by adding new courtrooms, expanding support areas, and modernizing the building to meet today’s safety, security, and efficiency standards.

Phase 1 included most of the new construction, including state and juvenile courtrooms, attorney and administrative offices, judge’s chambers, and security and holding areas.

The new courtrooms are designed to meet Utah’s Judicial Facility Design standards and feature updated courtroom technology and modern finish materials to create a more functional and efficient environment for judges, attorneys, staff, and the public.

Phase 1 also included new parking and a temporary courthouse entrance. Visitors should use the south entrance to park and follow the new path to the north entrance until the project is complete.

In future phases, the project will involve renovating existing areas to create a dedicated Wasatch County Justice Court courtroom and associated support spaces.

During renovations, the Justice Court will temporarily move to the new wing, while new spaces for the Wasatch County Attorney’s Office will be finalized in the last phase.

In total, the project will add 20,000 square feet of new space and remodel 12,000 square feet of the existing building.

The Wasatch County Sheriff’s offices and county jail, which are attached to the courts, are not included in this expansion and remodel. However, a master plan for the public safety campus, including the sheriff’s office and county jail, is in the works for the coming years.

Wasatch County issued a $23.4 million lease-revenue bond in 2024 to fund the project. The state will reimburse half the cost as part of the joint expansion. The county’s portion is covered by new revenue sources, with no property tax increase required.

Phase 1 accounted for about two-thirds of the budget and included most of the new construction.
